Chapter 4

Dax shut the door behind Nick and Beth who had insisted on helping clean up the dishes, though he told them it wasn’t needed. It had been a good evening, despite Miranda’s rude and early disappearance. His company assured him they weren’t offended and in fact, understood, but some things were just not to be accepted. He and Nick had communicated a little more and he understood a little more about Miranda than he had before. That didn’t really excuse her behavior though. Was she ready for the next step in her healing? Her mental healing? More than likely she was overdue.

He went back into the kitchen, debating whether or not he should check on her. He made coffee and set the timer for the morning, and started the overnight oats. It wasn’t quite ten yet and he wasn’t really ready for bed.

He went to his desk in the corner of the living room and fired up his computer. He missed his daughter. Lauren had taken her to her parents’ in Tennessee for a couple weeks, but she should be back soon, and he couldn’t wait to see her. Lauren preferred to communicate with him via email instead of text, though she would text now and then, so he checked his email to see if there were any updates. Just a quick note. “We are staying another week. Will let you know as soon as we get back. Addy sends her love.”

Great. Well, he knew Addy loved being there with her grandparents and loved the lake cabin they owned. Hell, he had, too. You lose everything when you get divorced. It was nothing he’d ever planned to do and still didn’t know quite what happened. One day, he’d been happy, the next day he came home from work and his wife and daughter were gone. It had been almost three years now and he’d accepted the fact they were gone and that he'd only be a part time figure in Addy’s life. Lauren was a great mom and while he could take her to court, he didn’t want to. He preferred a peaceful life for Addy and to see her whenever he could.

He paid a few bills and got up to stretch. Maybe he’d go to bed and see if there was a ball game on. Hesitating, he stopped. What was that noise? He walked back toward the bedrooms, and it grew louder. Crying? Was that it? Miranda – was she safe?

He strode to her door and pulled it open, without knocking. She was in bed, he could see via the nightlight he’d put in for her. Looking around, he couldn’t see or sense anyone else in the room, must be a bad dream.

Going to the bed, he sighed. He knew her emotions would finally come back and it looked like they were, in full force. When was her next virtual therapy appointment? He’d have to check. Sitting on the bed, he reached over and brushed her hair from her eyes.
